30 Daily Islamic Habits Worth Keeping

Organised by the three commitments: with Allah, with yourself, with people. Most take under five minutes. Read the whole list, then pick one — the temptation to start ten at once is the reason most people finish with zero.

A note before the list. These are not ranked by reward — only Allah measures that, and a small deed done sincerely and consistently can outweigh a large one done occasionally. They are ordered to be practical.

With Allah

Prayer, Quran, adhkar and dhikr, dua, fasting.

  1. 1. Pray one prayer at its earliest timeNot all five — one. Whichever you usually delay most. Everything else in this section is easier once this exists.
  2. 2. Read one page of QuranOne page. Roughly three minutes. Small enough that "I was too busy" is transparently untrue.
  3. 3. Morning adhkarBetween Fajr and sunrise. Start with Ayat al-Kursi and the three Quls if the full set feels long.
  4. 4. Evening adhkarBetween Asr and Maghrib. The same protection, at the other end of the day.
  5. 5. Tasbih after each prayer33 SubhanAllah, 33 Alhamdulillah, 34 Allahu Akbar. Ninety seconds, already at the right place and time.
  6. 6. Ayat al-Kursi before sleepingOne verse. Attach it to lying down, and it becomes automatic within a fortnight.
  7. 7. Istighfar 100 timesSpread through the day — commuting, walking, waiting. Dead time is the best time for dhikr.
  8. 8. Salawat on the Prophet ﷺTen in the morning, ten at night, and every time his name is mentioned.
  9. 9. Two rakah of DuhaMid-morning, once the sun is fully up. Short, and it reorients the whole working day.
  10. 10. Witr before sleepingEven one rakah counts. Pray it after Isha if you are not confident about waking for qiyam.
  11. 11. Make dua in your own languageSpecific, unrehearsed, about your actual life. The last third of the night if you can; any time if you cannot.
  12. 12. Fast Monday or ThursdayWeekly rather than daily, but it belongs here. One day a week is a realistic start.
  13. 13. Learn one new thing about the deenOne hadith, one tafsir of a single verse, one ruling. Five minutes, and it compounds enormously over a year.

With Yourself

Your body, your learning and work, your character. Your body has a right over you — this is not the secular part of your day.

  1. 14. Sleep early enough to pray FajrThe highest-leverage habit on this entire list. Nearly every spiritual habit gets easier downstream of it.
  2. 15. Move your body for 20 minutesA walk counts. Strength and energy are amanah, and you cannot pray qiyam on a body you are destroying.
  3. 16. Drink enough waterUnglamorous, and it removes a surprising amount of the fog you have been blaming on low iman.
  4. 17. Eat without excessA third food, a third water, a third air. Overeating after Maghrib is why Isha feels impossible.
  5. 18. Read ten pages of a bookAnything that is not a feed. Reclaims attention that scrolling has been quietly taking.
  6. 19. Do your work honestlyIhsan applies to spreadsheets. Doing your job properly is worship, not an interruption to it.
  7. 20. Guard your eyesMostly a matter of what you install and who you follow, rather than heroic self-control in the moment.
  8. 21. Ten minutes of silenceNo phone, no podcast. Muhasabah needs a gap, and modern days are engineered to have none.
  9. 22. Hold your tongue onceOne comment you were entitled to make and did not. Harder than most of the acts of worship above.
  10. 23. Review your day before sleepingTwo minutes. What did I do well, what did I owe someone, what am I repeating.

With People

Family, sadaqah, community. This is the section people postpone for decades, because nothing external ever reminds you.

  1. 24. Call or message your parentsDaily if they are alive. Dua for them daily either way. Nothing on this list will be missed more when it is too late.
  2. 25. Give sadaqahAny amount, daily. The smallness is the point — it builds the reflex of giving rather than the event of it.
  3. 26. Give your family undivided attentionTwenty minutes with the phone in another room. Present, not merely in the same room.
  4. 27. Say salam firstTo people you know and people you do not. Costs nothing, and it is a sunnah you can practise dozens of times a day.
  5. 28. Make dua for someone privatelyWithout telling them. The angel says: and for you the same.
  6. 29. Refuse one piece of gossipChange the subject. Do not forward it. Backbiting is the most socially normalised major sin we have.
  7. 30. Check on someone who is strugglingOne message. Someone in your contacts has been having a difficult month and nobody has asked.

How to actually use this list

Do not adopt thirty habits. You will keep them for about six days and then keep none.

Pick one from each commitment — three total, one from each section. Ideally choose small ones: one page of Quran, twenty minutes of walking, one message to your parents. Keep those three for a month before you touch this list again.

Three habits held for a year is roughly a thousand deeds. Thirty habits held for a week is two hundred, and then nothing, plus the belief that you are someone who cannot keep commitments — which is by far the more expensive outcome.

If you are starting today: one page of Quran, twenty minutes of movement, one message to your parents. That is a complete day across all three commitments, and it takes under thirty minutes.

"The most beloved deeds to Allah are the most consistent ones, even if they are small."
