Morning and Evening Azkar: How to Keep Them Every Day

The morning and evening adhkar take a few minutes, yet they are among the first habits to slip on a busy day. Here is when to read them, how to make them stick, and what a good azkar app should do for you.

Short answer: tie your azkar to a prayer (morning after Fajr, evening after Asr), read them from one place with a counter for the repeated ones, and tick them off so you can see your streak. BetterMuslim is a free azkar and du'a tracker with no ads: the full morning and evening azkar with Arabic, transliteration, meaning and a tap counter, du'as you can keep as daily habits, and a tasbih for your own dhikr.

وَسَبِّحْ بِحَمْدِ رَبِّكَ قَبْلَ طُلُوعِ ٱلشَّمْسِ وَقَبْلَ ٱلْغُرُوبِ

"…and exalt [Allah] with praise of your Lord before the rising of the sun and before its setting."

Quran, Qaf 50:39 (part), Sahih International

What the morning and evening azkar are

They are remembrances of Allah from the Quran and the Sunnah, said each morning and each evening: Ayat al-Kursi, the last three surahs (Al-Ikhlas, Al-Falaq, An-Nas), Sayyid al-Istighfar, and short du'as for protection, gratitude and wellbeing. Most people read them from Hisn al-Muslim (Fortress of the Muslim), the well-known collection by Sa'id al-Qahtani, which most azkar apps also draw from.

Some of them carry a specific promise. Of Sayyid al-Istighfar, the Prophet ﷺ said that whoever says it during the day with firm faith and dies that day before evening is among the people of Paradise, and the same for the night (Sahih al-Bukhari 6306).

When to read them

Most people read the morning azkar after Fajr, before sunrise, and the evening azkar after Asr, before or around Maghrib. Scholars differ on how far each time extends, so if you are late, read them anyway.

How to make them stick

  1. 1.Anchor them to a prayer. "After Fajr" and "after Asr" are easier to keep than a clock time.
  2. 2.Start with a few. Ayat al-Kursi and the three Quls, morning and evening, is a good first week. Add more when that feels easy.
  3. 3.Use a counter for the repeated ones. Counting on your fingers while reading from a screen is where people lose their place.
  4. 4.Read the meaning once. Knowing what you are saying turns a recitation into a conversation.
  5. 5.Tick them off. A record of the days you kept them is a quiet reason to keep going.
