How to Wake Up for Fajr (and a Fajr Alarm That Won't Let You Snooze)
Most people who miss Fajr do not lack the intention. They switch the alarm off half asleep and wake up after sunrise. The fix is partly the night before and partly an alarm you cannot turn off without getting up.

Short answer: go to bed early enough for seven hours of sleep, get wudu and your prayer mat ready the night before, put the phone across the room, and use an alarm that does not stop until you are up. BetterMuslim has a free Fajr alarm that keeps ringing until you read the waking du'a aloud or photograph your prayer mat. Pressing Stop alone does not end it.
وَقُرْءَانَ ٱلْفَجْرِ ۖ إِنَّ قُرْءَانَ ٱلْفَجْرِ كَانَ مَشْهُودًا
"…and [also] the recitation of dawn. Indeed, the recitation of dawn is ever witnessed."
مَنْ صَلَّى الْبَرْدَيْنِ دَخَلَ الْجَنَّةَ
"Whoever prays the two cool prayers (Asr and Fajr) will go to Paradise."
Ten things that get you up for Fajr
- 1.Work back from Fajr. Look up tomorrow's Fajr time and count back the sleep you need. Most adults need at least seven hours. If Fajr is at 5:30, that means asleep by 10:30.
- 2.Make the night before short. Pray Isha, put the phone down and sleep. Late screens are the most common reason Fajr is missed.
- 3.Sleep with an intention. Read your sleep adhkar and decide, clearly, that you will pray Fajr on time.
- 4.Remove the friction. Prayer mat laid out, clothes ready, a light you can reach. The fewer steps between bed and prayer, the better.
- 5.Put the phone across the room. If you have to stand up to reach it, you are already halfway there.
- 6.Use an alarm that needs proof. An alarm you can silence in bed will be silenced in bed. Pick one that only stops once you have done something awake.
- 7.Keep the same wake time on weekends. A late Saturday makes Sunday's Fajr much harder.
- 8.Ask someone. A family member, a roommate or a friend who prays Fajr. Agree to check on each other.
- 9.Track it. Tick Fajr every day. After two weeks you will see which nights cost you the prayer.
- 10.If you miss it, pray it as soon as you wake. Then look at what happened the night before, not at yourself. One missed Fajr is information, not a verdict.
The BetterMuslim Fajr alarm
BetterMuslim is a free prayer and habit tracker for iPhone and Android, with no ads. Its Fajr alarm is built for one job: getting you out of bed.
- ❋It rings at Fajr. Choose to wake before the Fajr adhan, at it, or after it. The time follows the prayer times for where you are, so you never reset it.
- ❋Stop does not end it. Silencing a ring is not enough; it keeps coming back for up to 40 minutes until you show you are up. There is no snooze button.
- ❋Two ways to stop it. Read the waking du'a out loud (the phone listens while you read), or take a photo of your prayer mat. The photo is checked on your phone and never uploaded.
- ❋Then Fajr is checked in. Once you are up, Fajr is ticked on your day and your morning adhkar are one tap away.
- ❋Honest when you cannot pray. On days you cannot pray (for example, during a period) the alarm can rest under Excused days, and your streaks stay safe. You can also skip one day; Fajr is then not checked in.
- ❋Free. No ads, no subscription. Turn it on from the glowing alarm on your Fajr habit or from the Prayer tab.
The waking du'a you read is the one the Prophet ﷺ said when he woke up:
الْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ الَّذِي أَحْيَانَا بَعْدَ مَا أَمَاتَنَا وَإِلَيْهِ النُّشُورُ
Al-hamdu lillahil-ladhi ahyana ba'da ma amatana wa ilayhin-nushur. "All praise is for Allah, who gave us life after He caused us to die, and to Him is the return."
Which phones it works on
| Phone | How it rings |
|---|---|
| iPhone with iOS 26 or later | A real system alarm (Apple's AlarmKit). It rings even on silent. |
| Android | Rings at alarm volume, even on silent. Allow "Alarms & reminders" so it rings right on time. |
| iPhone before iOS 26 | Loud repeated notifications until you are up. Keep the ringer on. |
An optional Tahajjud alarm works the same way for the night prayer.
Other ways to wake up for Fajr
- ❋Pillars has a Fajr Smart Alarm that moves with Fajr time each day, as part of its paid Premium.
- ❋Fajarly (free) only stops when you scan a barcode you set up beforehand, for example in the bathroom.
- ❋Alarmy is a general alarm app that makes you finish a task, like maths or a photo, to stop it. It is not tied to prayer times.
- ❋Your phone's clock app works too, but Fajr moves every day, so you have to keep changing the time.
