Surah Al-Kahf on Friday: Why, When, and How to Never Forget
Reading Al-Kahf on Friday is one of the easiest sunnahs to love and one of the easiest to forget. Most missed Fridays are not a choice. Nobody reminded you until it was Saturday.

The virtue
The Prophet ﷺ said: "Whoever reads Surat al-Kahf on Friday, a light will shine for him between the two Fridays." (Sahih al-Jami' 6470). A light from one Friday to the next, for one surah a week.
When to read it
Many scholars say the time runs from sunset on Thursday until sunset on Friday, since the Islamic day starts at Maghrib. Reading it on Friday morning, before the day fills up, is the simplest way not to run out of time.
How long it takes
Al-Kahf is the 18th surah, 110 ayahs, about 12 pages in the standard Madinah mushaf (pages 293 to 304). Most people read it in 20 to 30 minutes. Listening to a recitation takes about the same.
- ❋Split it: half after Fajr, half after Jumu'ah or Asr.
- ❋Listen on the way: on the drive or walk to Jumu'ah. Many people who cannot sit for 25 minutes can listen for them.
- ❋Make it a weekly habit: a habit that only appears on Fridays does not clutter the other six days.
Set a reminder that comes at the right time
A reminder at Maghrib on Friday is too late. One at midnight is too early to act on. Friday morning, after sunrise, is when you can actually open the surah.
